HOW TO SET HEALTHY BOUNDARIES Codependence is a false attachment to a person, place or thing. It becomes a false sense of importance. It is a learned behavior to take care of others’ needs at the expense of our own. It is driven by the excessive need for others’ approval. Rather than being inner oriented, you are “other oriented” looking for outside approval in order to feel whole. Being focused on others, takes the focus off of you and your own responsibilities. It is one who has let another person’s behavior affect him or her and who is obsessed with controlling that person’s behavior. Behaviors of codependency range from controlling to caretaking, they can be smothering, clinging and needy. These behaviors leave us feeling depleted and empty especially when they are not reciprocal. Co-dependency is a learned behavior that is often passed down from one generation to another. It is an emotional and behavioral condition that affects an individual’s ability to have healthy and satisfying relationships. In this group, we will identify codependent behaviors, become aware of our own behaviors, learn the characteristics of codependency, how these behaviors affect our relationships and discuss treatment methods. This will be a group of 10 participants. Confidentiality in group is required. Join us for our Codependency/Boundary group at The Hellenic Therapy Center, 567 Park Avenue, Scotch Plains, New Jersey. Space is limited.
